Willis High School graduate James Bagwell has been awarded a scholarship by Howard Hughes for college. James plans to attend Baylor University in Waco, Texas.
Over the years, Howard Hughes has awarded eight scholarships to Willis High School graduates. This year, Howard Hughes awarded over 30 scholarships to high school and Lone Star College graduates. These scholarships have been awarded through an educational funding initiative launched in the 1980s in which Howard Hughes continues today.
James was ranked #10 in his class of 609 students. He was a member of the Willis High School Marching Band, where he served as Drum Major, Section Leader, and Percussion Loading Crew Captain. He was also a member of the Montgomery County Education for Tomorrow Alliance’s Next Generation Leadership, National Honor Society, and Flags With Pride community service organizations.
Students are selected for the scholarship by Willis High School, where students residing in The Woodlands Hills attend. The criteria include a written essay on why the student enjoys living in Montgomery County.
In his essay, James expressed his appreciation for his hometown of Willis, where he enjoys family, friendships and school pride. Sharing part of his essay, he wrote:
“My favorite thing about living in Montgomery County is the school pride and support that I have experienced over the past two years. Being a part of the Willis Wildkat Band has enabled me to travel all over the state as we cheered the football team on as they progressed through playoffs this year. We were never alone. Countless buses full of fellow Wildkat fans joined us as we cheered for our team. When the band progressed to area in our state UIL marching competition, we were surprised and proud to see the football team in the stands cheering for the band. Montgomery County is full of people united in pride for our school who have embraced supporting one and another regardless of the sport or activity.”
Congratulations, James! We wish you all the best at Baylor!
